New Zealand Police Association Road Cycling and Mountainbike Championships
Hi everyone and welcome this years New Zealand Police Association Road Cycling and Mountainbike Championships held in Rotorua.
We have a great no expence spared program lined up for everybody to take advantage of featuring some of Rotorua best scenery, never ridden before course's and all the thrills and spills that you normally associate with the Whakarewarewa Forest.
We have even arranged the races on a Thursday / Friday so you can take the weekend to explore the many new trails that have gone in recently and also kick back and enjoy some of our natural wonders and low crime rate.
The program sticks with the same format of yesteryears with the tarseal element on the Thursday and the dirt side of things on the Friday.

The race HQ for this event will be somewhere (yet to be decided) on Mountain Road, Rotorua.
The course is from the start (?) on Mountain Road, up the tarseal road, through the forestry security gate and continue up the slopes to the very top of the Mountain (you can see the coast, and the pub from here). This road on Mount Ngongotaha was the access road to the start area of the 2006 World Championship Downhill course, so it has the elevation. The course will be around the 5 -7km mark, i have yet to ride it! (on my moped).
1500 All done.
1700 Prize Giving - location will be in town, but not at the station, so bring some locks for your bikes if your not staying over.
Friday the 6th - XC and DH races.
Both race HQ's wil be at the bottom of the downhill course situated on Pipeline Road - there will be limited parking in a skid site about 200 meters away.
Access will be signposted.
XC - Cross Country
0900 Registration
0950 Briefing
1000 Race starts.
The course, which i did in thick mud and heavy rain is 7km long and features 20% forestry road and 80% single track. The grade of the track is about a 2 with a few 3 pieces on the way. There is nothing in it that a novice rider would struggle with and all of it is walkable!.
It features 3 of the core Rotorua trails being - Chinease menu, Dragon tails and complete Bunny Jugs. I am did it in 25 minutes in a wet and overweight condition, so i'm expecting to see some 20 - 21 minutes laps!.
It is a reasonable course with some fun decents, short technical climbs and areas where you do get some rest - but not much!
Open Men - 4 laps
Masters & S-G-Masters Men - 3 laps
Open & Master Women - 3 laps
Men & Women Social - 2 laps
1200 finished.
DH - Downhill -
1200 Registration
1250 Briefing
The track will either be - the simplest route down the Taniwha National DH course or it may the Jumps Track depending on the weather
DH course 2.3km of full on downhill abuse with drops, jumps, roots and lost of bumps.
The jumps track is about 3.5km and features doubles, groomed table tops and well shaped berms.
1300 Practice - if we can start sooner we will.
1430 1st race run
1515 2nd race run
1600 finish.
I have the transport arranged from 1200 till 1600, so if anyone wants to ride the shuttle from 1200 they can do - this includes non DH participants. Although when the event is on, please allow race participants to board as a priority.
1800 prizegiving and social. all i can say is that there will be awards, mulitple spot prizes, beer, food and good times!
I am also thinking of 2 other aspects for the weekend, not assocaited with the event as such, but more of a something to do for those that want to.
I can arrange a mountain bike tour of the forest for those that dont get here all that often - about 3 hours.
There is also a chance of arranging some white water rafting trips with our police rafting guides.
They take police and familes trips down the grade 5 Kaituna river. Those that entered the raft race will know all about this - great fun and very exhilarating.
If anyone is keen on either option, please get in touch via lotus notes. David.Hamilton - (NOT david.R.hamilton)
Any other issues, information, maps etc - get in touch.
There will be further promotional material to follow.
