Forty competitors from as far a field as Whangarei and Invercargill converged on Mt Ruapehu’s, Turoa Snow Resort for the annual Police Association Ski Champs in early September. Unfortunately the weather didn’t come to the party and day one was cancelled due to the mountain being closed. The Police Ski Club Lodge became the hang out spot for the day with everyone relaxing and enjoying each others company.
Day two dawned a fraction brighter and the Giant Slalom was run on the lower mountain in fierce wind and sleet. Tauranga’s Mark Farrell logged the fastest time of the day to take out the open men’s division while Taupo’s Sue Moult took the number one spot in the female field. All competitors did extremely well in persevering with the very difficult race conditions.
Day three saw a welcome break in the weather and the warm up consisted of a few fresh track powder runs straight off the Giant Chair. The slalom eventually got under way with Scott Pitkethley and Sarah Thomson this time taking the honours. The snowboarders enjoyed some close racing with only a second separating 2nd from 5th.
The overall titles were sort from the fastest combined times over the four SL and GS runs to give the following champions:
| Open Men’s | Scott Pitkethley 1st, Mark Farrell 2nd, Dave Cowie 3rd |
| Open Women’s | Sue Moult 1st, Sarah Thomson 2nd |
| Novice Men’s | Craig Donaldson 1st |
| Novice Women’s | Nicola Anamani 1st |
| Over 50’s | Richard Hocken 1st, Tony Bowen 2nd, Milos Sismilich 3rd |
| Men’s Snowboard | Andrew Royds 1st, Troy Williamson 2nd, Troy Netzler 3rd |
| Women’s Snowboard | Lucy Field 1st, Victoria Guseva 2nd, Shelly Richardson 3rd |
Overall combined results are attached in this document.
The event was finished with a prize giving that saw everyone receive a spot prize and enjoy a meal at the Turoa Lodge in Ohakune. Many thanks from the organisers and competitors to the Police Association and Council of Sport for their vital support of the Ski Champs. Next year will see the event back at Turoa in either late August or early September.
