New Brighton takes out Southern Touch Tournament
On 22 November 2009, the North Canterbury Police again hosted the New Zealand Police Association South Island Police Touch Tournament.
The competition was held at the grounds of the Woodend Rugby Club.
The weather started of slightly wet but the day improved as the competition progressed.
For the first time in several years, New Brighton won after an exciting battle with Papanui, which ended with only 3 players in each team after the drop-off rules were implemented.
There were 12 teams in total, including Christchurch Corrections who won the inter-services trophy.
The organiser, Tony Maw said that everyone enjoyed themselves and the competition was again played in great spirit.
Tony added, "I was thrilled the way the day turned out. The weather caused some concerns but the day ended up fantastic. There has been great feedback about the day and hopefully we will see some more out of town teams next year. As usual, I really appreciate the assistance from the NZPA and the Council of Sport in sponsoring the tournament. Their support is always tremendous."
The next South Island tournament will be held in November 2010.
