Event

The Police Pistol Nationals are a Level one, Production class, IPSC pistol shoot. Only Glock pistols are allowed at the match making it a unique Police event.

IPSC (ip-sic) style shooting is a popular international event involving a combination of speed and accuracy and power.

A typical stage involves drawing from the holster and engaging multiple targets while moving. Reloading is often required while on the move and props such as doors and windows have to be negotiated while completing the course of fire. Some stages may be shot from just one standing position while others may require running, kneeling, going prone, or all of these combined. The variety of shooting styles required makes the event suitable for shooters of all ages and levels of ability.

To see what IPSC looks like in practice go to YouTube and search for APC IPSC. You will find plenty of video of competitors at Auckland Pistol Club shooting IPSC stages.

The Nationals are typically held on a Saturday in October. A prize giving ceremony is held at the range after the match. Trophies are awarded based on skill. Major prizes are awarded by lottery. Prizes have so far been made possible by GLOCK, Sportways, Serious Shooters, Tactical Solutions, Reloaders Supplies, and Uvex glasses.

Like any sport IPSC has a number of rules that are best learnt through practice. While you might have great gun handling skills IPSC is a sport governed by rules that can take a while to become familiar with. We encourage beginners to take part in the Nationals by way of our beginners stages. These are simple but challenging IPSC stages designed with the beginner in mind. A range officer is present and will provide one-on-one coaching for beginning competitors on the line. This is a great way to become familiar with the rules. Anyone who is familiar with the safe operation of the Glock pistol can take part in the beginners event.

To get a better understanding of what is involved in an IPSC match have a read of the Beginners Brief document.

Entry to the 2010 Nationals is now open. Entry Form. Saturday 30th October, Auckland Pistol Club.

Fully Involved

To get fully involved in the Nationals and take part in the main match can take a little experience with IPSC type shooting at a club level (and to participate fully a holster qualification is required) a typical sequence would be:

  1.  Obtain firearms licence
  2.  Visit Pistol Club
  3.  Join Pistol Club (6 months+)
  4.  Apply for B'endorsement
  5.  Obtain Holster Qualification.

This can seem like a lengthy process to get involved in the sport however it is soon completed. It is during the process that you will gain experience in shooting IPSC safely you will soon find competitions very enjoyable and achievable.
