NZ Police National Waka Ama Championship (Wellington): 3-4 April 2009

2009 Report

April 6th, 2009

A fabulous Wellington weekend saw the 2009 NZ Police Association Waka Ama Championships commence on Friday 3 April - overall event registrations totalled 34 Open and Novice Men, Women and Mixed crews - a Police event which opens up to non Police crews for the sprint event. This year unfortunately Gisborne and Napier had a late withdrawal which allowed a local crew to take up their position in the marathon event.

Superintendent Pieri Munro, NZ Police Wellington District Commander, opened both events with karakias that sparked attention, and by Sunday culminating with all participants joining him in reciting a karakia (in te reo).

First event up was the marathon event for open and novice paddlers with a total of 9 crews taking to the water. Challenged on the day by a local club compilation “Da Brathas Left Behind” , all completed their respective courses in good times. Saturday 4 April saw 26 races being run with support from local clubs and those more further afield as Nelson (Ruapapere Cruizers) and Wairarapa (Bush Boyz) - special mention go these two clubs who brought over novice junior paddlers who were literally that and whom you will see from the overall results performed extremely well against their adult counterparts.

Event Director was Mike Oxnam of Porirua Police Station supported by his committee: Secretary/Treasurer Helen Dickson, Dennis Ngatai, George Fa’alogo, Marinna Millanta-Lowrey, Bazz Bailey, Jackie Mulligan and Sharon Nicholas.

Special thanks go to the NZ Police Association and the NZ Police Council of Sport for invaluable support and guidance in the running of this event and to guest steerers for our crews: Daisy Halo of Tai Tonga, Raukawa Comerford of Aniuwaru, Mere Elkington of Toa, Marinna Millanta-Lowrey and Willy of Hawaikinui.

Prizegiving saw the attendance of NZ Police Association President, Mr Greg O’Connor, on hand to give thanks to all participants, acknowledge prizewinners and key role players none the least of which was the NZ Police College and Porirua Police Station for their resource assistance for this event. Full race results are detailed below - Police team placings were:
