Whanganui hosted the second Central District Cricket Tournament on 3-4 Feb in temperatures hitting 31deg on both days. Teams from Taranaki, Manawatu and Whanganui gathered (no Hawkes Bay this year due to Covid concerns) and played a round robin format.

Taranaki v Whanganui ended in a rare tie, even after a Super Over was played to separate the teams. This was an exciting match in which both teams played some great shots and took good catches. Taranaki then played Manawatu and found the hot conditions exhausting with it being their second game of the day – the game going to Manawatu helped by an impressive 75 from Alex Baddock. The last game, which was effectively a final saw Whanganui set Manawatu 138 to retain the CD Challenge Trophy which they did with 11 balls to spare. It was a well fought final match which saw many players bat well on a fair wicket and very fast outfield.

Thanks to Whanganui’s Sree Sreekumar and John Ferguson who worked hard to put the tournament together this year. Everyone is looking forward to this again next year (and hopefully having Hawkes Bay back involved). Well done to all the teams and well done to Manawatu who again came out on top.
