On Sunday 2 October the Matt Ratana Memorial Match was played between Counties Manukau and Auckland Police as the NPC curtain raiser at Navigation Homes Stadium in Pukekohe.

Sergeant Matt Ratana served in both districts before returning to the UK in 2008. Sadly, he was killed while working at a Metropolitan Police custody centre in South London in 2020.

Auckland were the current holders after their victory at College Rifles Rugby Club in 2020 before COVID put the annual match on hold. But in a close game (final whistle 26-24) Counties Manukau emerged with the win and were presented with the Matt Ratana Cup for 2022.

Both teams put on a great display and all can be proud of their efforts. Congratulations to the players of the day Steve Sione from Counties Manukau after his impressive three tries and Luatangi LI from Auckland.
